There is a 10 day grace period after expiration where you may renew your license without paying additional fees.
With the issuance of registrations for 2011, Louisiana will stagger the expiration of apportioned license plates throughout the year for existing accounts. New accounts opened in 2011 forward will expire 12 months from the month the account is opened.
Renewal packets are mailed out 60 days prior to expiration.

- Your valid out-of-state photo CDL or a letter of clearance or a copy of your official driving record.
- In addition to number 1, you must meet the ID requirements (Section I, Policy 6.00). Original documents only. Photocopies not accepted.
- Provide proof of social security number (card or letter from SSA).
- Submit a copy of your completed medical examiner’s certificate.
- Proof of insurance on any personal vehicles you have registered in Louisiana.
- Proof of Residency
- If you have and wish to retain your Hazardous Materials endorsement (X or H), you will be required to successfully complete the written test.
- You will be required to submit to a vision exam at the OMV office.

A $15 delinquent fee assessed on any license expired for more than 10 days. If you let your license expire, you are subject to a traffic citation. Citations issued for Driving without Valid CDL Privileges is considered a serious offense and mandates a disqualification of your CDL privileges as well as reinstatement fees.
There are 3 basic classes of CDL:
- Combination vehicles (Class A) – Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000. NOTE: If the vehicle being towed has a GVWR of 10,001 lbs. or more, Class A is required. However, you will be required to test in a combination that has a GVWR of 26,001 lbs. or more.
- Heavy Straight vehicles (Class B) – Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more OR any such vehicle towing a trailer/vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Small vehicles (Class C) - Any single vehicle or combination of vehicles (that meets neither the definition of Class A or Class B) but that is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver OR is used in the transportation of hazardous materials in amounts required to be placarded.

Attach a copy of your out-of-state driver's license or birth certificate and a $5.00 fee. The fee must be in the form of a money order, cashiers check or certified check. No personal check are accepted.
